Clearing the last bit of path to the main road

Through the field

The former back entrance to the SMILE compound was just a temporary one. As the livestock is coming soon and their habitat has been closed that path can no longer be used. The children now use a new path which has been cleared and bordered by bushes and cactuses. Midway a bench under a tree creates a nice place to rest or read. Once the bushes will be fully grown thepath is expected to become very pretty indeed!

The new path

Entrance to the animal farm

Almost

It is said that if you catch roaming cattle on your land the owner must pay an amount per animal to get it back. Ever since we have been growing crops a flock of sheep from the village has been chopping lots of it. As the wall is almost finished we had the opportunity to capture some. Which we did but they were able to jump through a temporary opening in the wall.
Luckily for the owners we have not been able to catch any.

Apemanim

After a short break we were happy to welcome Ingrid to Ghana. Yao and Saharah picked her up from the airport. Next day during the trip to Kokobeng Saharah already grew fond of Ingrid. Tamar soon sat on her lap as well and a lovely week followed.
Until now our volunteers have assisted at the Kokobeng kindergarden and primary but

the SMILE compound lies  in between Kokobeng and Apemanim. So we asked Apemanim primary school if they would be interested in a foreign volunteer and Ingrid was more than welcome. After the proper procedure was taken she could start assisting with sports and games. In the afternoons Ingrid likes to work in the garden and assist Yao, Asare and Kwabena with different kinds of construction work.

Ready to go

The schoolbus has been repaired. New tires are fitted. The driver took it for a full day's testdrive, as we want to make sure the children are transported safely! The vehicle documents should be ready by the end of the day so tomorrow insurance papers can be bought. The tank is full and ready to go.

Finally

If we are lucky the rain season has finally kicked in. The weather has been acting strange here. People used to be able to predict the rain and dry seasons and farm the land accordingly. These days many crops wither or get flooded as there seems to be no rhythm to the rain any longer.

Chicken

We have new chicks and they are well guarded by their mother. We wanted to show one up close to the girls but risked being attacked by it's mom. Keep up the good work mom! Two more nests are about to hatch. The chicken

keep finding new places to hide their nest. One was found in between bags of corn and the other behind the spare wood in the workshop. The initial eleven chicken we started with will then have multiplied to sixty. If we let them continue to breed there will be too many.
So from then onwords we'll search for eggs daily.
