Big fish
The two rain water reservoirs are a perfect habitat for mosquitoes to breed. Dishwashing liquid prevents the larvae to hang on to the surface. But this is an expensive and environment unfriendly way to deal with it. The best solution is to introduce fish and the reservoirs are definitely big enough. We started out with one male fish found in a small stream near Kokobeng but we would like it to be able to pro create so we bought a female catfish. The water is often renewed so whatever the fish secrete fertilizes the land and fresh rain water fills their pond. The mosquitoes no longer get a chance to breed and the children like to watch when the fish are fed as they make quite an appearance! |
Catfish and Asare
Fierce storm
Last week heavy rainfall included a storm strong enough to destroy a small part of the wall. It was the end of the wall where a workshop is to be built for which we are still waiting for funds. Without the workshop structure in place it wasn't strong enough to withstand the abnormal heavy storm.

Good news!
We have a trotro!
A young man needed to sell his trotro fast as his parents had other plans for him.So with the help of our garage man he came down from his initial price of 8000 to an affordable 5000 Ghana cedis.
|
It does need some work before we can use it so we’ll spend another 1000 cedis on repairs and new tires but our garageman assured us it was a good car. The trotro or soon to become schoolbus is Bordeaux red which we will leave it for now. In time we would like to spray it Sky blue and add the text “Tamarinde Daycare”.
If possible we´ll have the schoolbus ready when the daycare starts again next week!
We would like to thank everyone who contributed to this project and will keep you updated in following news pages.
Thanks again on behalf of all the staff and children!!! |

Living trees support the fence |
The animal farm fence has been put up. Within weeks the shelter should be ready as well. But the wall needs to be completely finished before the animals can come. The staff is afraid some of the animals will disappear if the compound is still open to anyone
In the meantime Miss Blue (replacement of Mister Green, the dog) has been brought to Kumasi to mate. As soon as she is pregnant she will return to Kokobeng. |
